TESOL Arabia 2017 Pre-Conference Development Courses

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

As part of the TESOL Arabia 2017 Conference, organizers have put together a number of development courses for conference attendees. Development Courses are smaller, more focused full-day workshops that are led by our invited speakers and locally-based experts.

On Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 four pre-conference development courses will be on offer. They are:

What follows is a brief description of each of these courses:

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

A traditional definition of what constitutes a research literate teacher is one which states that teachers should have regular opportunities to engage with and explore the implications of research, and students should be entitled to lessons which are informed by the best research-based evidence. With this definition in mind, the first part of this full-day development course, led by current TESOL International Association President Dudley Reynolds, will focus on how teachers can advance in the profession through research and learn how increased knowledge and understanding about research can make them better teachers. In part 2 of this course, led by David Palfreyman, the focus will be on helping teachers decide among the different research approaches and data collection techniques that are available to them. The final part of the course, facilitated by Daniel Xerri, will focus on how to appropriately and effectively reflect on research and consider its relevance to our own professional contexts.

PRE-CONFERENCE   Leadership Development Through Coaching and Mentoring

pdf-icon

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

To advance as a leader in the field of TESOL, it is not enough to have leadership potential and skills. Future teacher leaders must also have the knowledge and motivation to coach and mentor others with whom they work. Traditionally mentoring has often been mentioned with reference to seasoned teachers taking on a leadership or advisory role with new teachers. However, recent research on effective leadership suggests that leadership development that focuses on and incorporates mentoring and coaching will assist teacher leaders in combining theory and practice. Join invited speakers, Sufian Abu-Rmaileh, Mohammed Azaza, Sonia Elhaj and Kathy O’Sullivan, as they take you on a journey of exploration on what constitutes effective mentoring and coaching relationships among teacher leaders.

 PRE-CONFERENCE   Technology-Enhanced Teacher Development

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

Technology is becoming increasingly important in both our personal and professional lives, and our students are using technology more and more in the Gulf. Yet despite this fact, teacher training programs often ignore the importance of training teachers how to use technology effectively in their teaching. As a result, teachers are often far less skilled than their own students in the use of technology in the classroom. In this full-day development course, join Bashaer Al Kilani, Faith Nightingale and Ann Marie Parkes as they introduce some of the most important technological developments in ELT.
